Do you really need a niche market?

Being in web design, I used think it would be challenging to work exclusively with one industry and trust that it will work out. I’m always curious when I stumble upon other web designers who specialize in only building website for acupuncturists or who only build websites for realtors. I really didn’t know if they were successful or not, I just thought it sounded boring.

For years, I’ve feared labeling my services to work directly within an industry or have a specialty. Why not just be a jack of all trades, it’s fun, diverse, and exciting. I used to think that way, but recently, I’ve realized that there is value is specializing.

After spending time with a business coach last fall, she helped me do research and discover that specialization is a good thing. I learned that by focusing on something specific, I could get really good at it, find other freelancers who could help easier, and really understand and help the market I want to serve. It also helps people remember what I do and they can easily tell their colleagues, partners, clients, and friends. Things get much easier!

Making the decision to help women business owners build their e-commerce websites and serve small businesses who want sustainable green web hosting has been incredible!  Having a niche market to focus on helps me know:

-which networking groups or seminars I should attend
-know which message boards/forums I should spend time on.
-know which leaders are in my industy.
-it helps me filter and know where to spend my energy. It’s a been a gift!

If you are a freelancer and have been a jack of all trades, consider how much extra work you put into your marketing. Check out these blog posts for more ideas/motivation to help you get started on your niche market:
